EMHIRES applies an innovative approach trying to reproduce wind and solar power time series at both national and regional levels covering the whole Europe with a homogeneous methodology avoiding the use of artificial or on-purpose tuned correction factors. EMHIRES is able to capture the variability of wind and solar energy, in particular peaks and ramps, in a much more accurate way than previous meteorologically derived time series. The purpose is to develop an ab-initio methodology for wind and solar power production simulation and apply homogeneously to all Europe. The methodology has provided results ranging between good and excellent for all countries for which reliable TSOs data are available, regardless their sometimes huge geographical diversity. Using EMHIRES for power system analysis will increase the accuracy of generation adequacy assessments, renewable energy integration studies and market studies for flexibility technologies such as storage. This report details the second part of EMHIRES, covering solar energy production.
The project covered six European countries (incl. Germany, France, Great Britain, Italy, Austria, Spain) and Turkey. Private investors and decision makers in banks and insurance companies were introduced to the new business models, allowing them to include these results in their decision process as regards new investments. The project also assessed what political framework for the application of new financing models is required and which barriers slow the PV expansion.
A fast-growing solar power industry in India's Rajasthan will soon be transmitting up to 8,000 megawatts of renewable energy to the national grid. The Government of India, the Asian Development Bank and the Clean Technology Fund are supporting this effort through the $800 million Rajasthan Renewable Energy Transmission Investment Program, which is also providing livelihood opportunities for local communities.
Launched in 2013, IRENA’s Global Atlas for Renewable Energy is an initiative aimed at facilitating access to data, analysis, and tools for assessing renewable energy resource potentials. The Global Atlas for Renewable Energy is a web platform that allows its users to find maps of renewable energy resources for locations across the world. Users can access maps via an online platform that presents data graphically in a map-based format. The Global Atlas contains maps for solar, wind, geothermal, biomass, and marine energy. The online platform also includes a number of integrated tools that allow users to, for example, generate wind statistics, estimate the electrical output of a proposed solar PV project, or view solar time series data.

This technical report by the Joint Research Centre (JRC) provides information abou the Future costs of low carbon energy technologies, including also photovoltaics and solar tehrmal electricity technologies. The report presents internally consistent trajectories of capital investment costs to 2050 for selected low carbon energy technologies. In order to do so, it combines global scenario projections of technology deployment with the one-factor learning rate method. Global scenarios are used to identify a range, based on potential deployment, in line with baseline assumptions and two long-term decarbonisation pathways. A sensitivity analysis is performed based on different learning rates and results are compared with literature. It is found that, depending on the technology, a 15 % to 55 % reduction in capital investment costs of offshore wind turbines, photovoltaics, solar thermal electricity and ocean energy may be achieved by 2030 compared to 2015.
This study assesses the impact of materials on the competitiveness of the EU’s clean energy technology industry, taking into account several factors such as security and concentration of materials supply, price volatility, cost intensity in the technology, etc. These factors, together with the EU’s resilience to potential materials supply disruptions and mitigation possibilities, have been analysed for three technologies, namely wind turbines, solar PV panels and batteries. Wind power was found to be the most vulnerable technology in relation to materials supply, followed by solar PV and batteries.
The project aims at demonstrating and introducing into the market key enabling technologies to improve predictability and flexibility of a Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) plant with molten salt energy storage. These technologies are the design and operation of molten salt once-through steam generator, allowing fully flexible plant operation and an integrated weather forecast and dispatch optimization, allowing fully predictable energy dispatch. CSP will undergo large growth in developing markets, where grid constraints and market liberalization will play a role. Developing these key-enabling technologies will put European industries in the position to compete at the forefront in the market worldwide.
This research project scope aims at the definition of an ECRIA (European Common Research and Innovation Agenda) engaging major European research institutions with activities on Solar Heat for Industrial Processes (SHIP) into an integrated structure to consolidate existing EU and national resources.
INSHIP aims to develop coordinated R&D activities (TRLs 2-5) with the ambition of progressing SHIP beyond the state-of-the-art through:
- An easier integration of low and medium temperature technologies suiting the operation, durability and reliability requirements of industrial end users
- Expanding the range of SHIP applications to the EI sector through the development of suitable process embedded solar concentrating technologies
- Overcoming the present barrier of applications only in the low and medium temperature ranges
- Increasing the synergies within industrial parks through centralized heat distribution networks and exploiting the potential synergies of these networks with district heating and with the electricity grid.
This research project aims to develop a revolutionary innovation in water management of Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) plants, a more flexible integrated solution comprising different innovative technologies and optimized strategies for the cooling of the power-block and the cleaning of the solar field optical surface. The integrated solution provides an effective combination of technologies allowing a significant reduction in water consumption (up to 70% - 90%) and a significant improvement in the water management of CSP plants.

This report examines renewable District Heating and Cooling potential up to 2030, based on three main technology pathways. The baseline “Reference Case” builds on current national energy plans in nine countries (China, Denmark, Germany, Poland, Switzerland, Japan, the United States, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates). The “REmap” case includes rapid scale-up within planned DHC capacity. The third pathway, “Structural Shift”, assumes expanded DHC capacity, with new networks fed entirely by renewables.

The government of Korea has unveiled a plan to help the PV industry reduce the cost of solar panels from around $0.23/W to $0.10/W by 2030. The plan also aims to reach module efficiencies of around 24% – up to 35% for multi-junction cells – by the end of the next decade.

This webinar will give practioners the first hands-on information on the design of RES auctions. Here, we will go through the selecting of adequate auction formats and pricing rules for RES auctions. We base our recommendations on the ongoing theoretical and experimental analysis work currently undertaken by auction experts in the AURES project. We will show how the selection of the appropriate design depends on specific policy goals and market conditions in a country. We also present how certain designs may score in terms of different success criteria (such as effectiveness, efficiency, socio-political feasibility and more), and what trade-offs and synergies may arise between criteria.
